The Importance of Lay People in Fulfilling the Great Commission

The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20), as stated in the Bible, is the command given by Jesus to his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. This command is not limited to pastors, missionaries, or church leaders. In fact, the involvement of laypeople is crucial in fulfilling the Great Commission.

Lay people, those who are not ordained or employed by the church, play a vital role in spreading their faith and the message of the gospel in their everyday lives. They have a unique opportunity to connect with a wide range of individuals, including coworkers, neighbors, and friends who may not have any exposure to organized religion. Through their actions, values, and conversations, lay people can serve as living examples of their faith. They can demonstrate love, compassion, and integrity in their interactions, which can be a powerful testimony to the transformative power of their beliefs. In doing so, they create an environment where others may become curious about their faith, leading to meaningful conversations and potentially opening the door to spiritual growth.

Another is, that lay people have the advantage of relatability. Their non-clergy status often makes them more approachable and less intimidating to those who might be skeptical or unfamiliar with religious institutions. By simply sharing their personal experiences and stories of faith, they can bridge the gap between the sacred and the secular, making spiritual concepts more accessible and understandable to others. This ability to connect on a personal level and to be a genuine, caring presence in the lives of those they interact with allows lay people to have a significant and lasting impact on the spiritual journeys of those around them, ultimately contributing to the growth and spread of their faith outside the walls of the church.

It is also notable that lay people often have access to areas and communities that pastors and missionaries may not have. They can reach people in their workplaces, schools, and local communities in a way that professionals may not be able to. This means that lay people have the potential to reach a wider audience and make a greater impact.

The involvement of lay people in fulfilling the Great Commission is not only beneficial for those they reach but also for their own spiritual growth. Engaging in evangelism and discipleship helps lay people deepen their understanding of the gospel and develop a stronger relationship with God. It allows them to step out of their comfort zones and rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance and empowerment.

In conclusion, the involvement of laypeople is essential in fulfilling the Great Commission. Their unique opportunities, wider reach, and personal growth make them valuable partners in spreading the gospel and making disciples of all nations.
