Ezra chapter 4 begins with a group of people coming to Zerubbabel, the leader of the Southern Kingdom, offering to help in the construction of the Temple. At first glance, this seems like a generous and cooperative act. However, as we get into the chapter, we discover that their intentions are far from pure.

These people, known as the Samaritans, were a mixed race who had been resettled in the Northern Kingdom by the Assyrians. Accordingly, one of the grandsons of the current high priest Eliashib had married a daughter of this Sanballat the Horonite, the Governor of Samaria and they had received, perhaps by that virtue the Pentateuch that made their claim they also worship the God of the Israelites. Samaritans, however, worshipped foreign gods. And since they also accepted the God of the Israelites, they had offered their assistance with an ulterior motive. Accordingly, their aim was to infiltrate and undermine the rebuilding process, causing Zerubbabel and the Israelites to abandon their mission.

Despite their initial rejection, the Samaritans did not give up easily. They resorted to various tactics to hinder the progress of the Temple reconstruction. They sent letters to the king, accusing the Israelites of rebellion and insurrection. They even managed to convince King Artaxerxes to issue a decree to halt the construction. This setback was a severe blow to Zerubbabel and his people, but they did not lose hope.

With determination and faith, Zerubbabel and the Israelites are resilient enough to continue the rebuilding of the Temple. They found strength in their unity and the assurance that they were carrying out God’s will. They were not swayed by the opposition or deterred by the challenges they faced.

Finally, after enduring years of setbacks and opposition, the Lord’s Temple in the Southern Kingdom was completed. It was a testament to the resilience and unwavering commitment of the Israelites. The triumph of the rebuilding process was not only a physical accomplishment but also a spiritual victory, demonstrating the power and faithfulness of God.
