Introduction:

As we gather today, we reflect upon the most significant moments in Christian history: the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus’ words from the cross are not merely statements; they are heart warming revelations of His love, sacrifice, and His call for us to serve humanity selflessly. Today, we’ll get into the “Seven Last Words of Jesus” with a focus on the theme of sacrificial humanitarian service to the world.

Bible Passage:

The Seven Last Words of Jesus on the cross are recorded across the four Gospels. For the purpose of today’s sermon, we’ll refer to Luke 23:34, Luke 23:43, John 19:26-27, Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34, John 19:28, and John 19:30.

How these words does speak to us?

  • In His first word, Jesus exemplifies divine mercy. Even in excruciating pain, Jesus prays for forgiveness for His persecutors. This teaches us the transformative power of forgiveness and the need to extend it to others, even when it’s difficult. Let us be agents of forgiveness in a world filled with resentment and bitterness.
  • Jesus’ second word shows His grace. To the repentant thief, He offers immediate salvation. It reminds us that it’s never too late to turn to God, and we should be instruments of grace in people’s lives. Let us extend grace to those who seek redemption, reminding them of the boundless love of Christ.
    • Even in His suffering, Jesus ensures the care of His mother, Mary, by entrusting her to John. This reflects the importance of familial and communal care, reminding us to look after one another, especially the vulnerable. Let us care for our families and communities, ensuring that no one is left behind or neglected.
      • Jesus’ fourth word expresses profound human despair. It underscores His complete identification with our human experiences, including feelings of abandonment. This reminds us to empathize with the suffering of others and offer comfort. Let us empathize with the suffering, offering comfort and support in times of despair
        • In His physical thirst, Jesus highlights His humanity. It serves as a reminder of the basic needs that many in our world lack. It calls us to address the physical needs of others through acts of service and charity. Let us address the physical and spiritual needs of others through sacrificial service and charity.
          • Jesus’ sixth word signifies the completion of His redemptive work. It emphasizes the victory over sin and death, and it inspires us to persevere in our service, knowing that God’s work through us will ultimately prevail. Let us persevere in our mission, trusting in God’s sovereignty and the ultimate victory over evil
            • In His final word, Jesus entrusts Himself completely to God. It’s a powerful declaration of faith and surrender, challenging us to trust God wholeheartedly and surrender our lives to His service. And above all, let us surrender our lives to God, committing ourselves to His divine purpose and the betterment of humanity

In conclusion, as we reflect on the “Seven Last Words of Jesus,” may we be inspired to embody His love, grace, and sacrificial service in our daily lives, making a meaningful difference in the world around us. Amen.
